Being True To Your Truth
" SOMEONE may turn his room upside down looking for his keys only to find these in front of him! How could he have missed them?"
We were having a late lunch at Mang Inasal and in between mouthfuls, our friend talked to us about Kabbalah, a school of thought he was so passionate about. Kabbalah defines among others, the nature and purpose of existence. Pretty heavy stuff to discuss over grilled chicken!
My friend explained, " Sometimes we cant see things not because they are not there BUT because we lack focus! We only see what we want to see."
What he said struck a chord inside and I stopped pouring the yellow chicken fat on my rice to process what he just uttered.
He was right. Sometimes we want something but our focus is on something else and in the process, fail to get what we want.
If you want to look for keys, focus on finding the keys! Got it!
My friend smiled. "When you study and practice the teachings of Kabbalah, you can reach a level of existence where you can actually tell a mountain to move and it will move! "
"You are not referring to that literally are you? " I asked. "Anybody can make a mountain move through his imagination...meaning, in his mind, but not in reality! "
"But who is to say that the mountain has not moved?
Mmm. Our eyes?
The conversation reminded me of the most mentally challenging movie I have seen in recent years, the "Inception". In this movie, the team of Leonardio de Caprio is in the business of getting into the subconscious of another person. While inside the dream, the team "injects" an idea and when the person wakes up, the "modification" becomes part of his reality. As the dream within a dream is presented, the scenes become more and more ambiguous. Which one is real? Which is the dream?
When I mentioned this to him, he excitedly exclaimed. "Exactly! We might be living a dream. This might not be reality! "
"Take this wall for example, " he placed his hand on the glass wall, "I can tell my mind that this is not real and it will not be real. "
"But if you vigorously knock your head unto it, the wound will certainly be real," I said.
"Not if you have reached the level of your existence where you can now dictate your reality and you now have power over the material world", he said.
He mentioned levitation and described his out of the body experiences. It was pretty much like the "twilight zone" stuff.
"If this was a dream, then I have not actually eaten the chicken, right? Then I can go to the cashier and ask for a refund because the chicken was never given." I said jokingly.
"If this was a dream, you never really paid, so you cannot ask for a refund," he rebutted.
That afternoon, I learned three things
1. We generally create our own truth. There are a lot of schools of thought out there that present very interesting explanations about this world we live in and the life we are living. Inherent in all of us is the need to know.
2. We choose the truth we want to believe in and we want others to believe in this truth too. Many have died defending their "truth."
3. Because the human mind has a limitless capacity for creating an explanation for things, transcribed as "truth", it cannot be trusted. Therefore, there is no reason to insist our truth to be the only truth. And probably our only job is to be true to whatever is our truth and make allowance for the truth of others too.
