The Natural Order of Things
He folded his hands and looked at me with pursed lips and knitted brows. Caucasian, in his late 70's who spoke his mind without reservation.
" How can choosing a mate be so difficult?" he said as if it was the craziest idea ever to cross his mind.
It has become customary for us to spend 10-15 min each visit talking about things he read in the internet, from medically related stuff to politics. He has given me the same quizzical look several times before especially when my stand counters his and I appreciate his candidness in almost every issue.
While he was sharing how the internet was instrumental in him finding his filipina wife whom he considers as the love of his life, he asked me why I am not married or never been married.
" By choice and by circumstance..", I quipped.
" By circumstance you mean...?" he asked
As much as I would have wanted to change the topic, I know he will never stop unless I give him a satisfactory answer so I said, " I mean, it is hard to find a husband.." and as soon as I said this, he gave me the "look".
" Do not complicate things Doctor. Simply listen to your body parts." he remarked.
"What do you mean?"
" Look, it starts with the mind, the head being in the topmost area. If you constantly think about the person, eventually he will be in your heart." he placed his hand on his chest. " When the person is already in your heart, he will then be..."
" In your stomach? " I butted in. He let loose a loud guffaw.
" He will then be in your loins, doctor, in your loins," He explained that only relationships that follow this order will last. The head must be convinced first because it is the mind that will make couples stick it out when emotions and sexual urges fade.
"Does it end with the loins sir?" I teased.
"Of course not. It ends with the legs! The person must first be in the mind to convince the heart. Once the heart is persuaded, then the groin follows. Once all three are in, then doctor...you walk...you walk the aisle! It is that simple!"
